Special FX and Make-up |
Most SPFX
make-ups are done with prosthetic appliances (foam latex or Gelatin);
custom made to fit an actor. In a nutshell, these are the steps to achieve a SPFX make-up: |
1) We cast
or mold the actor to produce a plaster duplicate. 2) New features are then sculpted in plasticine (oil-based clay) over the plaster duplicate of the actor. 3) The sculpted features are then molded. 4) Once cleaned, the molds are filled with foam latex or Gelatin. |
5) After
baking for a few hours, the pieces are cleaned, dried and sometimes pre-coloured. 6) The final step consists in gluing the appliances on the actor using a medical adhesive and completing the coloration. |
If we were to
describe a heart transplant as we did with SPFX make-up, the list would
read as such: 1) Cut. 2) Remove the bad heart. 3) Replace with new heart. 4) Close. Obviously, the steps above only serve as a description of a much more complex and time-consuming process. But it gives you an idea. |
